Mother’s Love

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (NIV)

A mother’s love is never wavering, even when it’s hard. It can go beyond fabulous. No matter how many buttons a child or children press, she never gives up. It’s pretty incredible.

According to the Word, love is patient (even when explaining the same thing for the hundredth time). Love is kind when family members are sick and can’t care for themselves. Love doesn’t want what others have or promote themselves, and as mothers, you have this opportunity to teach your child or children to do the same. A mother’s love seeks to bring honour, not dishonour, to her children and/or spouse. She bites her tongue when she knows her temper is short, and forgives an unlimited number of times.

Just as you, as a mother, worry, Christ Jesus feels a mother’s nurturing love for His people.  In Matthew 23:37 (NIV), He expressed the cry of a mother’s heart that longs to shelter and protect her children. When your children are hurt or afraid, you want to wrap your arms around them. But sometimes, as they grow, they reject a mother’s offer of comfort and shelter. It’s hard to watch them hurt and not be able to intervene. However, we serve a God who is more than able to protect our precious children.

There are many examples of God protecting children in Scripture: Genesis 21 speaks of Hagar being sent away from her home, thus making her unable to provide for her young son. Her family was broken, her son might die, and she was powerless. But God heard Hagar in the desert, and He hears your cry for your children. Even when your heart is broken, you’re not alone. Sometimes, in our journey of motherhood, we have to let go and give our children to God’s care, even if it breaks our hearts, since we cannot always control what happens with them.

Psalm 46:1 (NIV) tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” This emphasises God’s role as a safe place; He is always ready to assist in times of need. It is human nature to worry, but remember who you serve. He desires to have a relationship with you (Revelation 3:20).

Just as Mother protects her children. so God protects his children.
